TWO MORE TICKED OFF

I was on a roll you see, I managed to get the next two on my list done, bit creased these two, should have waited to press them, ho hum. I wasn't too sure about this Foot Stool week 2 - where the heck did that name come from? But now its done I like it. Just as well.

Dewey's Dream week 4 , I really do like this block, lots of potential I feel for a full size quilt one day...maybe!!!

Here are the next seven blocks ready for me to sew, I have to cut out in the natural daylight, as the artificial one in the evening gives me all the wrong colours, I think they look good, then the morning shows what a shambles it really is. I used the covers for my postcards to keep the little bits in. I am not normally this organised, but I have a lot of catching up to do to get up to speed.

Wyoming Valley, version 1 and 2.   The red points in the upper right hand side were going the wrong way.  I considered leaving them in but decided to fix them. 

Dewey's Done Dreaming

Since it's a ten incher I did the homespun deal again. I was liberal with the spray starch. I must say, I am popping my buttons I am so proud. It turned out perfect. Exactly the right size and narry a nipped off point in sight.

I like the illustration quilt on page 2 in the instructions. I may file it in my someday file. I'm a sucker for star designs.

Em's block #4

I know I'm a little late for the Friday block party. I just couldn't put away all the Valentiney reds I have been playing with. So here is my block. Fashionably late, better late than never, a day late and a dollar short; whatever you want to call it. There it is.

Heather - Week 4

For the week 4 block I decided to stay with the bright colors.



I did this a bit differently than the directions said. I made 2.5" by 6.5" black and white rectangles for the sides and added red triangles to them instead of piecing them all in squares. That made it go faster.

Spiders in the Tulips?

I followed Brenda's lead in rearranging the blocks as I like the visual of tulips. So, here's Dewey's Dream, followed by all 4 blocks sewn together.

Only 1 more block to make a row.

How did it get to be week 4 already?? Since this is a 10" block, it's back to the batik scraps... it's still two colors but I used a different blue in the middle for a little texture. Next?

Some you like, some you don't

Finished both weeks 3 and 4 blocks and staying with the black, white and green theme. I don't think Rotunda will be reappearing any time  soon - too many small pieces. I do like the fact that this block party is really making me work hard to improve the accuracy of my piecing - not something much needed in art quilts. May not be obvious to others but I can see an improvement already. Thanks Donna, great idea.

Dewey Dream Transformed

I really like the way my block turned out using my 3 fabrics, but interestingly enough it doesn't look like a dewey dream block. Just goes to show you the selection and placement of fabric can really change the way a block looks. I still need some practice on the piecing of the block, a few areas aren't quite there yet but I'm coming along.

I also want to share with everyone a few tips/tricks I learned this week at a workshop given by Cathy Tomm for putting together half square triangles. If you have a lot of them to do this method certainly speeds up the process without sacrifice to quality. First you need to mark a 1/4" sewing line on the bed of your sewing machine with either painters tape or masking tape. I took my Omnigrip ruler and placed it under my presser foot and lined up the needle with the 1/4" line. To the right of the ruler I placed the painters tape. As you can see Jordie was supervising the operation.

For 2 1/2" finished half square triangles start with 3" squares. Take the Omnigrip ruler and just put a small mark at the top left hand corner where your 1/4" seam would be start. (Sorry for the glare but without the flash the picture was way too dark.) The central line from which you are measuring the placement of the mark is the diagonal line from corner to corner of the fabric.

Take your two pieces of fabric (right sides together) and line up the needle with the mark that you made and line up the bottom point of the fabric with the edge of the painters tape and sew. Keep an eye on the bottom point to ensure it keeps following the edge of the painters tape. You can chain piece all your triangles this way. Once you have done one side, just repeat on the other side (mark starting point and line up with needle, line up bottom point with edge of painters tape and sew ensuring that bottom point follows edge of painters tape). Cut and press triangles as usual.

To trim triangles there is this handy little 2 1/2" Omnigrip ruler. Again sorry for the glare. It took a bit to getting the hang of using it, but once you got it, it does make the trimming process easier than with the bigger rulers. The ruler has a diagonal line marker and you place it along the diagonal of your half square triangle and line things up before cutting.

Week 4, with enthusiasm

Brenda from Scraps and Strings with my second attempt at the block party. (I was in a car accident last Friday afternoon and couldn't wrap my head around figuring out the last block. That says more about me then the block. I feel better now.) I'm using the same marbled background fabric as in Week 2, this time with a sueded looking deep rose hand dye. I changed the value placement on HST on the outside, making the block into more of a star. I quite like it this way. It sort of looks like tulips with this colourway.

A Really Good Dream!

I really liked this block and would definitely do it again...it only got wobbly one time during strip sonstruction, but all in all...I think I like it a lot. Completed it measured at 10.5 inches. I am not bothered by the different sizes of the blocks because when it comes time to put them together, I am sure that you all will help me figure all that out. I just love coming here wach week and trying out different blocks. I really love the pinks and blacks together.

dewey dream

Dewey Dream is done, and while not a nightmare, its not my dream of paradise either... overall I'd rate this block as "boring". I don't know what it needs to spice it up, but for me, it just has too little pizzazz as a single block. Maybe it was my fabric choices....

I was happy to use precut squares from my scrap collection that I've been cutting up and storing using Bonnie's scrap system. I was able to simply look through the piles and find "red/purples" that played well together and some lights. I realized I have almost no lights in my scraps! I'm not sure how scrappy I'll be able to do lights in coming blocks, but I do have light yardage that'll be being used!

Dewey Dream Quilt

I have finished this week's block! I think it turned out great! But, as you can see, it is pink again. I seem to be in a Valentine mood this week. Oh, well. It will go nicely with the other 10 inch blocks, which I did in batik fabrics.

I might try this one again using a different colour way. It is very fast to put together and now that I have worked out the half square triangles, it is even becoming easier!

Week 4, and January is coming to an end...

This week's block is called "Dewey Dream Quilt", another 10" block -- a pretty nine patch with a border of hst (half square triangles)

I'm beginning to wonder where all the 12" blocks are that I chose, but there it is. I'm choosing a number randomly by drawing a card from a jar, and then matching it with a list I have. About half the blocks on the list are 12", but given how the first few weeks have gone you'd never know it! :-)

I've been busy cutting squares and bricks and organizing my scraps following Bonnie's scrap system so have lots of 2.5" scrap squares to choose this weeks fabrics from -- my first block using pre-cut fabrics from this system! :-) Hopefully that'll encourage me to use more variety in the fabrics as it should be relatively easy to do so... guess we'll see when I get to the sewing.
