I'M STILL HERE

Bet you all thought I had forgotten about these blocks. No way! I have been a bit busy on other things. I am now in catch up mode again. I pulled a load of fabric from the cupboard at cut it into strips which I thought were the most popular sizes used for these blocks and have been gaily chopping away. Here are the results so far....

Here are my strips...

and off I go...
Queen Charlotte's Crown - Week 31

Hearth and Home - Week 30

Mrs Morgan's Choice - Week 29

1930's Square - Week 24

1941 Nine Patch - Week 23

Z Cross - Week 26

Leap Frog - Week 12

Rally Round - Week 34

Envelope Motif - Week 28

Windmill 2 - Week 27

Rotunda - Week 3

Triangle Chain - Week 25

You may notice slight differences in my blocks and the printed ones on Quilter's Cache, I just decided I would do them a quicker way from some of the instructions given!!! Oops! Sometimes I went wrong too! Oh well, can't be helped, I am getting there though...off I go to make more of the backlog blocks.

Whewww! All Caught Up.

Well, except for the new one QP posted yesterday. It looks like a good one so I'll get on it this weekend. But I did get all the others done. So here you go....

Week #31~Queen Charlottes Crown. I loved Hetty's history lesson. It made this block all the more interesting. Done in homespuns.

Week #30~ Hearth & Home. This one looked so easy I didn't even bother to read the directions but just used 2 & 1/2" strips & squares I already had cut.

Week #29~ Mrs. Morgans Choice. I didn't care for the design of this block so I copied Kathie. Sometimes it seems like Quilter's Catch makes these blocks more difficult than they need to be by using all those little pieces when a larger piece would do just as well.

Week #28~ Envelope Motif. What's with that name? It look's like a star pattern of some sort. Shouldn't it be Star Something-or-other?

Week #27~Windmill 2. This was a smaller block so I used those bright fabrics for my grandbaby quilt. I've got some multi-colored polka dot fabric I will sash it with to tie the blocks together. Jackson is going to need sunglasses when he's laying on it.

Week #26~Z Cross. I actually did this block back in June but apparently I never posted it here. I was quite intrigued by the secondary pattern created with multiple blocks and actually put together a small wall hanging.

The wall hanging has a nice primative look to it so I am quilting it with that heavy perle cotton and using a big stitch. I've never tried that before and I'm having a heck of a time. I'm not sure how to bury the knots. I may do some machine quilting to finish it up because the heavy perle cotton stuff is a real pain to stitch with.

Playing catchup again

I've been using my sewing time to work on a few projects so I knew I was getting a bit behind on these blocks. But I was shocked to realize that I was 5 weeks behind! I'm going to get caught up now.

Here are weeks 31, 32, and 33 (clockwise from top left).

weeks31-33

Week 31 is made with some horrible vegetable fabric. This must have spontaneously generated in my stash because I've never seen it before and I know that I wouldn't have bought anything like it. It looks much better cut up into small pieces.

Week 32 was a nice simple block. I made it with 3d flying geese to add some texture.

I actually followed the quilter's cache instructions for week 33. I usually do anything to avoid sewing triangles together. I realized how rarely I use written directions. As I was sitting at the computer taking notes on what sizes to cut, my boyfriend walked by and asked if I was cheating. I had to explain that it is ok to use directions even if he'd never actually seen me do it before.

Just two more to go and I'll be all caught up.

So far behind

I'm several weeks behind in doing blocks -- and I might catch up, and I may just say it was a holiday and move forward. I'm undecided at this point, though leaning heavily to the later given the purpose of this challenge in my life :-)

This week's block I made using my new Singer Featherweight :-) First sewing I've done on it, and yup, I'm in love.

I'm thinking doing the Friday blocks on it will give me practise and help me become familiar with it, but if this block is any indication it shouldn't take long!

more batiks

I'm several weeks behind but trying to catch up again! I really like the way these two came out -- Hearth and Home
and Queen Charlotte's Crown. I have fabrics picked out for the other two blocks I'm missing, but probably won't get them sewn up 'til the weekend.

In Charlotte's Crowning Glory

I agree with Vicki. It has been rather quiet here at the FBP! Long weekends are great, but I never get my regular things done. The block for this week is finished, however. I took a photo using the flash, but I think the colours are okay. A nice block, this one. But for anyone who hasn't done it yet and is planning to, I would recommend that you lay out all the pieces before completing the block since those HST seem to have a mind of their own and want to go in all different directions!

I use the internet to look up information almost every day. I am sort of an information geek! Usually the information is very precise. But I was kind of disappointed with what I found for Queen Charlotte. There was a lot of discrepancy.

Queen Charlotte was the queen consort of the United Kingdom as the wife of King George III. She was born on May 19th, 1744 as Her Serene Highness, Duchess Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. She was the eighth child of the Prince of Mirow, Charles Louis Frederick and his wife, Elisabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen. She is said to have been directly descended from Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a black branch of the Portuguese Royal House. Her mother arranged for her to marry King George III when she was only 17. She was not George's first choice and was considered rather plain and not very pretty. She was not well liked by George's mother. Regardless, she was brought to England and was married. Charlotte and George grew to be very happy together. Their marriage lasted for 57 years and 70 days until her death. They had 15 children in the first 21 years of their marriage, 13 of whom reached adulthood.

Queen Charlotte was an amateur botanist and helped to establish Kew Gardens in England. She was interested in fine arts and had a great love for music. At her request, Mozart, at the age of eight, dedicated his Opus 3 to her. Her pen pal was Queen Marie Antoinette of France. Charlotte also founded orphanages and a hospital for expectant mothers. She believed in a sound education for women and her own daughters were better educated than was the norm for women of that era. King George III reigned during a turbulent era. As a result, Charlotte witnessed the execution of Marie Antoinette and the bloody events that followed.

The more I learned about Queen Charlotte, the more I like this block!

Vicki's Week 30 & Week 31

Here's week 30 - Hearth & Home

And week 31 - Queen Charlotte's Crown

I'm finally doing a bit of catching up and the easiest was to do the 10" blocks since my plan was to make all the 10" blocks with the turquoise, mottled pink batik and the dark indigo floral outline fabrics. So at least I didn't have to spend time thinking about what fabrics to pick. I had to make a few modifications to these two blocks since the original patterns only called for 2 colours of fabric. Both went together fairly easily and visually are interesting. I think the next time there is another 10" block I will have to gather all of these blocks and take a picture of them to see how they look together.

By the way it's been quiet here at the FBP this weekend and for those who are not from Canada, it was a long weekend here so that probably in part explains the lack of activity over the last few days.

Week 31

I had some lovely gold batik for this block, Queen Charlotte's Crown, which turned out really nicely. I was curious as to why this name - so checked it out. It's a very old block from the American Revolution honouring Queen Charlotte, King George's wife and America's last Queen!

I quite like the idea of a quilt made from this block, so used my two-sided mirror to see what it would look like.

I'm quite tempted!

week 31

I almost forgot! This going back to work after a long holiday is for the birds...

This week's block is Queen Charlotte's Crown.
