Heather - Week 9

I liked making this block. It is quick and easy. I did the center as a square with corners added and then did flying geese units for most of the rest of the HSTs so I didn't have all the seams. I'm not crazy about my fabric choices now that it is done. They looked a lot better together before I cut them out.

your breakdown of the pattern for sewing makes a lot more sense than the HST with all those seams... :-)

The center square is 6.5 inches.
The blue (in this version) is cut 3.5 inches square for the corners. I sewed across the diagonal of the square and flipped the piece back to make the triangles on the center square.

Also cut 4 - 3.5 x 6.5 blue rectangles. Cut 8 - 3.5 inch squares of the yellow. Put those on the corners of the blue rectangles using a sew and flip method to make the flying geese units.

I made the corner HSTs by cutting 2 squares each 4 inches square of yellow and purple. I layered them right sides together and sewed a 1/4" away from the diagonal. That gives slightly oversized squares that can be trimmed to 3.5".

Thanks for saving me the math. I agree getting rid of all those hst was a great idea.

Nice job, Heather. The blue Batik is really nice (I'm a sucker for Batik) and the colors in the center block are nice with it. Supplying the math for the block was good of you - wish I'd checked before I did my block... I like yours much better.

Wow! Wish I had seen your block before I did mine. This makes a lot more sense! Thanks for sharing the measurements.
