SLOWLY GETTING NEARER

Trying desperately to catch up with everyone, I cut out a few more to make as and when, as I could and when I can basically. I have had to send my beloved Bernina to be fixed--don't ask-- I am using a Janome at the moment and it is driving me nuts, I cannot get on with it at all. They say a bad workman blames his tools... I am all over the place with the machine, but have got to do them, so just carried on as best I could. I took these pictures with a white lace cloth behind them, had to really cut them quite a lot so as to block out the hideous white lace - not a good look at all.

I was making this as Dakota Gold - WEEK 16
I kept thinking, this is the same as Starflower, why am I making two
the same? Should have stopped, I hadn't printed the first page out had I -
doh! so of course didn't see the picture properly, this too will stay as is,
but I will make the proper block - eventually...

Lessons learned from these blocks, don't let your concentration waver, don't sew when you are tired, choose your colours in the daylight, make sure you are reading the pattern properly

Ros - Week 25 - Triangle Chain

Hi! I'm Ros from London, UK and I have just joined the block party. I started a blog earlier this year and I've been having a lot of fun. I've just completed 3 different swaps with ladies from US and Australia. I saw this block party and thought it would be a bit different. I've been quilting on and off for about 10 years and enjoyed sewing since I was at primary school. I enjoy a challenge and I love bright colours, particularly batiks.
I'm married with a daughter at uni and a son in secondary school, both musicians. My husband runs an IT business so I help him a lot, and I spend the rest of my week in church activities (running a bookshop, designing and making banners, fundraising, and involved with the youth ministry).

This is a block which I made in another swap which I thought you might like to see. It is the Union Square from week 19.

Reformed Slacker

I spent a marathon day yesterday in my sewing room. It helped that the weather was crappy and Hubby was making dinner. Many, many hours later, fortified by chocolate, cashews, coffee and a glass of Merlot, I am happy to say I am a slacker no more. Here are the results, although I won't say they are for your viewing pleasure! Some are nice. Many are downright ugly. But the bottom line is that I am fully caught up with Friday Block Party! Here they are, eight weeks of the good, the bad & the ugly.



Week 24: Interesting block.


Week 23: Extremely easy and not very interesting.

Week 22: I love stars and this one is a favorite. I was pleasantly surprised that my points all matched!

Week 21: Ugly block. Stupid construction technique. I didn't put the little square onto the rectangle but just cut the strip to size. This one as a stand alone is awful. It is destined to be an orphan. As a whole quilt it is much better. I still don't like it.

Week 19: I love this block. My piecing on this one went smooth as silk so I guess I am improving. Someday I will make a quilt with Union Square blocks.

Week 2o: This one was interesting and different.

Week 17: I like this block. Very easy to piece. It would make a good alternate block in a top to create a different look.

Week 18: I have never liked this block. I think it must be the whole Nazi thing I associate it with. This was my last block of the day and I think the glass of wine was taking effect. It is pretty sloppy.

So there you have it. I'm all caught up. One thing I can say for certain is that I am getting pretty darn good at working with the homespun fabrics. I use a lot of spray starch on it and it really helps. I plan to put all those blocks into a quilt one of these days.

Almost Caught Up!

This feels great! I'm getting caught up! Tonight I made blocks 17 and 19. All I have left to make is this week's block, #20. (I decided not to make week 14, that crazy star within a star. I'm too lazy.)

Scrappy Catch Up

This weeks block was quick and very simple. I had to tweak it a little since I didn't have enough pink dot in my scrap bag. Last weeks block turned out very scrappy. Trying to use up bits and pieces from recent projects. I wish I would have use fabrics that read darker for the star point.

Oh well. It will look nice in another block party quilt when I get enough blocks again.

what week is it, anyway?

I've never been a huge fan of the fly-foot block -- it reminds me of spiders and I'm not super fond of spiders... anyway, I thought it would be boring to do it in just two colors so I used threem and it's still boring!I liked the union square block, although I kinda blew off a couple of points when I sewed the borders onto the square-in-square piece. The gold fabric is actually some of Ami Simm's apple pie filling -- I knew it would be good for something!

Kathie's Week 19

I liked this block because I have an affinity for 'square in a square' patterns. I recently made 240 3 inch ones for Bonnie Hunter's latest mystery quilt (still in progress). So this single one was a snap.

Union Square Didn't Want to Come to a Union

Well this block proved to be a challenge and I had to get the seam ripper out a couple of times. The points just didn't want to come together. I took liberty with Donna's improvisation of a 2 colour version and I like the way it looks, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort.

I managed to focus and get to this week's block done before the tail end of the week :-)

I'm thrilled with how it turned out -- no unsewing of seams or other struggles. I did slow down and take my time, but it sure paid off!

Union Challenge!

I found this block hard! I don't know if it was the directions or what. I had to really think when I put it together. I found the little heart applique block in my scrap bin. I think it was left over from a baby quilt or tutorial. I am surprised this block turned out as good as it did. I like it, but I doubt if I will be making any more.

week 19

wow the weeks are just passing by... I'm so proud of how many have kept up with so many blocks. The variety of fabrics and "tweaks" to layout as well as ideas for construction have been wonderfully inspiring. Thanks for playing along and keeping me on task! :-)

Onto the pattern for week 19 -- Union Square. this has a few more pieces to get matched up again, and some long outside borders with points to place properly... Guess we'll really see if we've learned things doing these blocks! :-)

The upside is we've all learned "how" to read the instructions on Quilter's Cache and can approach the project in our own way...
